Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios made an early exit from the men’s singles competition at the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament after retiring from his first-round match against Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp. The tournament, currently taking place in the United States, saw Kyrgios struggle before withdrawing when he was trailing 3-0 in the second set. Van de Zandschulp had already secured the first set with a narrow 7-6 (9-7) victory.
With this win, Van de Zandschulp advances to the second round, where he will face Serbian legend Novak Djokovic, the sixth seed in the tournament. Djokovic, a multiple-time Grand Slam champion, will be a formidable opponent for the Dutch player as he seeks to progress further in the competition.
Meanwhile, experienced French star Gaël Monfils also secured his place in the second round after overcoming Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Monfils, known for his athleticism and entertaining playing style, will now prepare for a challenging encounter against American Sebastian Korda in the next round.
Serbian player Dušan Lajović also had a strong start to his campaign, cruising past Australian Li Tu with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory. Lajović’s convincing performance underlined his strong form as he moved into the next stage of the tournament.
In another first-round match, Belgian David Goffin secured a hard-fought win over Italian Lorenzo Sonego, prevailing 6-4, 7-5. Goffin, a former Top 10 player, displayed resilience to overcome Sonego and book his spot in the second round.
Portuguese player Nuno Borges also joined the list of second-round qualifiers after defeating Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in three sets. Borges started strong, winning the first set 6-1, before Rinderknech fought back to take the second set 7-5. However, Borges regained control in the third, winning 6-2 to seal his victory. He will now face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.
Other first-round results included American Jenson Brooksby securing a win against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, and Czech player Jakub Menšík defeating Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry.
Additionally, American Mackenzie McDonald emerged victorious over Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, while Italy’s Matteo Gigante managed to get past Argentina’s Sebastián Báez.
The tournament also saw Italian Matteo Arnaldi claim a win against American Aleksandar Kovacevic, while Frenchman Hugo Gaston edged out Italian Luciano Darderi. Meanwhile, Australian Adam Walton added his name to the list of second-round contenders by defeating Italian Giulio Zeppieri.
With several high-profile matches lined up in the second round, the competition is expected to intensify as top-seeded players enter the fray.
