Roy Keane, the legendary former Manchester United captain, has dismissed the possibility of Arsenal winning the Premier League title under the management of Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners have seen their chances of lifting the trophy fade significantly after falling 15 points behind league leaders Liverpool, with 28 rounds of the season completed. This substantial gap has all but ended their hopes of securing their first league title since the famous "Invincibles" campaign in 2003-04.
On Sunday night, Arsenal faced Manchester United at Old Trafford in a crucial Premier League clash, which ended in a 1-1 draw. This result dealt another blow to their already slim title aspirations, allowing Liverpool and Manchester City to strengthen their grip on the top positions.
Speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, Keane was asked whether he believed Arteta was capable of guiding Arsenal to a league title in the near future. His response was emphatic and dismissive:
"No, what makes you think the manager is capable of that?"
Keane elaborated on his stance, pointing out that Arsenal have come close to winning the league in recent seasons but have ultimately fallen short. While acknowledging their progress, he expressed skepticism about their ability to take the final step and secure the title.
"They have been very close to it in the past few years, but Manchester City will be strong again next season, and I’m sure Liverpool will be too."
The former United midfielder believes that Arsenal will face even tougher competition moving forward, particularly from Manchester City and Liverpool, two teams with a proven track record of title success. He also hinted at the potential resurgence of other top clubs, such as Chelsea, who could become a threat in the coming years.
"Pep Guardiola will regain his strength, and we don’t know where Chelsea will be, but what evidence is there that this Arsenal squad will be capable?"
Keane acknowledged that Arsenal have been competing at a high level and have made significant strides under Arteta. However, he stressed that competing for titles is not enough—winning them is what truly matters. In his view, Arsenal still have a major hurdle to overcome if they want to go from challengers to champions.
"They are competing, but winning titles is what matters. We should praise them for what they have achieved in recent years, but the next step is the hardest."
Keane's remarks reflect a broader skepticism among some football analysts about Arsenal’s ability to dethrone City and Liverpool. While the Gunners have shown progress, their lack of a recent league title and the strength of their rivals make the challenge even more daunting.
