Barcelona Rejects Raphinha’s Demands in Contract Renewal Talks Amid Financial Pressures
FC Barcelona has turned down the initial contract renewal demands made by the agents of Brazilian winger Raphinha, despite acknowledging his impressive performances this season. The player, who is under contract until the summer of 2027, has been one of the standout names in the squad, drawing praise for his consistency, creativity, and work rate. However, his future at Camp Nou may now be uncertain due to financial disagreements.
According to a report by Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona's sporting director Deco recently opened negotiations with Raphinha’s representatives to discuss a possible contract extension or improvement. The club recognizes the winger’s significant contribution on the pitch and is open to rewarding him with a better deal that reflects his current level of performance.
Deco and Raphinha’s agents reportedly agreed on the principle that the 27-year-old deserves a salary that is more aligned with his status and impact within the squad. However, the talks quickly hit a stumbling block when the player's agents presented what Barcelona considered to be excessive financial demands. These demands included a substantial salary increase that the club is currently unable to accommodate due to its ongoing financial challenges.
In response, Deco made it clear to Raphinha’s representatives that the club is not in a position to meet such high wage requests. He even went a step further by suggesting that if the player’s camp insists on these demands, they should begin looking for potential suitors willing to pay a significant transfer fee. Barcelona would be open to discussing a sale if a serious offer comes in, particularly in the range of 80 to 90 million euros.
Despite the club’s stance, Raphinha is not eager to leave. Sources close to the player indicate that he has no intention of departing Camp Nou before the end of the 2025-2026 season. The Brazilian international is said to be fully focused on continuing his development with Barcelona and hopes to be in peak form for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which he views as a key milestone in his career. As such, he is unlikely to consider any lucrative offers from other clubs until after the tournament.
Barcelona’s position reflects the club’s current financial reality. While Raphinha is seen as an important asset for the team and a key player for manager Xavi Hernández, he is not considered “untouchable.” In contrast, young star Lamine Yamal is viewed as a cornerstone for the club’s future, with the board determined to retain him at all costs.
Ultimately, the negotiations between Raphinha and Barcelona remain in an early phase. While the club values him and hopes to retain his services, any potential contract renewal will have to be balanced with the broader goal of financial stability. Unless there is a compromise, the situation could lead to serious transfer discussions in upcoming windows, especially if interested clubs are willing to meet the high asking price.
